The Fool stands at the precipice of a great cliff, gazing skyward with absolute trust, a small satchel of experience slung lightly over one shoulder. In the Rider-Waite tradition, a white sun blazes behind him and a small dog nips at his heels — the companion of earthly instinct urging caution even as the soul yearns to leap. He holds a white rose, symbol of purity and the untouched potential of a soul not yet hardened by the world.
When The Fool appears in a reading it often signals the very beginning of a new chapter — a journey, a project, a relationship, or a state of mind that is refreshingly unformed. It invites the querent to embrace beginner's mind: to release the heavy armour of experience and approach what is coming with open, curious hands. There is enormous creative energy in not yet knowing exactly how things will unfold.
In reversed positions, The Fool can warn of naivety taken too far, or recklessness masquerading as courage.
